Boom, Sparkle, Safe: Your Guide to a Joyful (and Safe) 4th of July

​Nothing says summer like the 4th of July—grilled hot dogs, red-white-and-blue desserts, and a sky full of fireworks. It’s a holiday that brings family, friends, and neighbors together to celebrate freedom and fun. And while we all love the oohs and ahhs, have you ever wondered how fireworks actually work? 

Fireworks are basically chemistry with a light show. Inside each shell are tiny pellets called stars, filled with metal salts. When ignited, these salts burn in brilliant colors—copper for blue, strontium for red, sodium for yellow. A timed explosion launches them into the air, then another burst sets off the grand display we all know and love. Beautiful? Yes. Harmless? Not exactly. 

Every year, thousands of people are injured by fireworks—often during small backyard shows. So while we’re all for a good time, let’s make sure it doesn’t end in a trip to the ER.

Whether you're lighting sparklers in the driveway or hosting a full cookout, these tips can help keep everyone safe: 
1. Leave the big shows to the pros. 
Local fireworks displays are safer, better coordinated, and frankly—way more impressive. 
2. Supervise kids closely. 
Sparklers burn at around 2,000°F--that’s hotter than a blowtorch! Never let young children handle them unsupervised. 
3. Keep water nearby. 
Always have a bucket of water or a hose within arm’s reach in case something goes wrong. 
4. Be kind to pets. 
Fireworks can be terrifying for animals. Keep them indoors, play soft music, and consider calming treats if needed. 
5. Know the law. 
Fireworks regulations vary across Florida. Check your local ordinances before lighting anything up.
