Did you know? August marks the start of the most active stretch of hurricane season in Florida. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, but storm activity historically peaks between mid‑August and late October. In fact, some of the most powerful hurricanes on record have formed during this period.
That makes now the perfect time to double‑check your emergency plans and stock up on essentials—and this year, Florida families have even more reason to do so.

New Permanent Tax Savings on Preparedness Items

Thanks to recent changes in Florida’s tax law, many items that were once only tax‑free during limited‑time holidays are now permanently exempt from state sales tax. Starting August 1, 2025, you can buy the following items year‑round without paying sales tax:
  • Batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 6‑volt, and 9‑volt)
  • Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Portable generators
  • Waterproof tarps and sheeting (1,000 sq. ft. or less)
  • Ground anchor systems and tie‑down kits
  • Portable gas or diesel fuel cans (5 gallons or less)
  • Life jackets and bicycle helmets
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent

With these new exemptions, it’s never been easier—or more affordable—to make sure your household is storm‑ready.

Your August Hurricane Prep Checklist

✔️ Refresh your emergency kit. Take advantage of the tax savings to grab batteries, tarps, or a
new generator if needed.
✔️ Review your evacuation plan. Know your evacuation zone and local shelters.
✔️ Protect important documents. Keep copies of insurance policies, IDs, and medical
information in a safe, waterproof place.
✔️ Stay informed. Sign up for local weather alerts and keep an eye on trusted forecasts as
activity ramps up.

Florida’s extended back‑to‑school tax holiday also runs August 1–31, so you can plan both your school shopping and your storm preparedness while saving money.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and remember—we’re always here to help protect what matters most.
