Each September, National Preparedness Month serves as a powerful reminder to plan ahead for disasters — especially here in Florida, where hurricane season is still going strong. Launched by FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security, National Preparedness Month promotes awareness around emergency planning and readiness. Each year comes with a different theme — and in 2025, the focus is: “Take Control in 1, 2, 3”.

A call to action focused on helping older adults, particularly those living alone, managing chronic conditions, or facing mobility challenges. Whether you’re a caregiver, a neighbor, or an older adult yourself, here’s what you need to know to stay safe and supported.

Why the Focus on Older Adults?
According to Ready.gov, older adults can face unique challenges during disasters — from power outages that affect medical devices to evacuation difficulties due to mobility issues or lack of transportation. By planning ahead, we can reduce those risks and give families peace of mind.

✅ Take Control in 1, 2, 3

1. Assess Needs
  • Does your loved one rely on oxygen, CPAP, or refrigerated medications?
  • Would they need help evacuating?
  • Do they live alone?
Take stock of their day-to-day needs and what might be disrupted in a storm.

2. Make a Plan
  • Create a contact list (family, doctors, pharmacies)
  • Identify backup power sources or shelters that accommodate medical needs
  • Prepare a “go bag” with medications, supplies, IDs, and insurance info

3. Stay Informed
  • Sign up for local emergency alerts
  • Know your evacuation zones
  • Check in with neighbors who may not have access to up-to-date news

Florida-Ready Resources for Older Adults
  • Florida Special Needs Registry – Let emergency managers know if you or someone you love needs extra assistance during a disaster
  • Ready.gov – Older Adults Guide – Step-by-step instructions for aging adults and caregivers
  • Florida Department of Elder Affairs – Assistance programs, caregiver resources, and elder support lines
  • Florida 211 – Call for help finding food, housing, medical supplies, or transportation

Preparedness includes peace of mind. If you’re unsure whether your current policy covers things like:
  • Evacuation or temporary housing
  • Medical equipment in the home
  • Flood or windstorm damage

Let’s Look Out for Each Other
Whether it’s your parent, your neighbor, or yourself — a little planning goes a long way. This September, take the time to prepare, check in, and spread the word.

From your Clearvue family, stay safe and stay connected.
